I've always thought that population is just going up and up and up, but now, I've heard, in the book "The Ghost Map" that birthrates are starting to tapper off. Its said that 2.1 children for every woman is enough to sustain a metropolitan area. Many of the developing countries are, or were up to 6 children per woman, Developed countries were 1.5 or less children per person, but the numbers are all falling. I see this as sort of a positive sign. If the population has a peak, then our impact on the environment doesn't have to be a runaway catastrophe. I can't say as to why birthrates are expected to taper off, anyone hear anything on this?
